Recently described as the “New Avocado Toast”, hemp is not just a hip new trend; studies are pouring in showing some serious health benefits for some serious ailments! In this post we’re going to focus on Asthma and how studies have shown some really positive results in combatting this all-too-common condition.
What is Asthma?
According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, Asthma is “a chronic (long-term) lung disease that inflames and narrows the airways. Asthma causes recurring periods of wheezing (a whistling sound when you breathe), chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing. The coughing often occurs at night or early in the morning.
Asthma affects people of all ages, but it most often starts during childhood. In the United States, more than 25 million people are known to have asthma. About 7 million of these people are children.”
How does Hemp help with Asthma?
In 2015, Francieli Vuolo and company evaluated the role of cannabidiol in the treatment of asthma in an animal model. They acknowledged that because T-helper cells are found in the lungs of asthmatic patients and because these cells produce cytokines- that control the synthesis of antibodies- they must have a central role to the onset of inflammation. Francieli Vuolo and company induced asthma in adult male Wistar rats (8 weeks old) with the use of 2% OVA (chicken oval albumin) in 100 microliters of aluminum hydroxide. The results were that cannabidiol treatment decreased the levels of four types of antibodies(IL-4/5/6/13) in the rats.
What does this mean for you!?
This is great news for Asthma patients because it means that hemp has the potential to provide relief in asthmatic patients by decreasing the inflammation in inflamed airway walls! While these tests are still being conducted and have not been signed off on by the FDA, this is very promising research for hemp and it’s potential homeopathic use for this chronic ailment.
